A movement-shaped chest of drawers opening to two drawers wi - Lot 306
A movement-shaped chest of drawers opening to two drawers without rails, decorated in black, red and gold lacquer with Chinese figures in a landscape. Rich chased and gilded bronze frames adorned with rocaille foliage and moldings. Sides adorned with dragons in bronze molding. Cambered legs. Sarancolin marble top with double molding and spout. Stamped several times J Dubois and poinçon de jurande. Louis XV period, circa 1750 Height: 86.3 cm; Width: 99 cm; Depth: 80.5 cm (old restorations and restorations to the marble) Jacques Dubois (1694 - 1763), a late master in 1742 after a long career as a free laborer in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, was of French origin, unlike most of his colleagues, and was one of the most famous cabinetmakers of the 18th century. He took particular care with the rocaille-style bronzes with which he adorned his furniture, and his after-death inventory contained a particularly large number. The elegant, symmetrical, double-cross design shown here is typical of his style, as are the falls and moldings on the uprights.
